Introducing an Incredible Tool Text Based editing

Saving massive amounts of time using Adobe Premiere Pro text based editing software

Text based editing

Text based editing with Adobe Premiere Pro. Recently we filmed 10 interviews for Robert Johnson at the AAQEP Institute conference right here in Salt Lake City, Utah. Overall, we had almost 3 hours of footage to condense into short 2-3 minute videos. Anyone who has undergone this type of task with editing knows that it is a time consuming project.

Premiere pro text based editing

Enter Adobe Premiere Pro new text based editing tool currently in a beta test platform. The timing could not have been better. I was just about to jump into the hours of footage when I got an email from Adobe about its new text based editing feature! Needless to say, I was eager to give it a try!

Condensing 3 hours of raw footage

Robert wanted a say in the video editing process. Normally, this is not how we do it, I had already sent him the transcripts from each interview. There were a total of 5 videos on different subjects that we were planning on editing. He sent me a text document outlining the various text quotes from the people interviewed that  he wanted to include in each video. Normally this would be a timely task, scrubbing through each interview to find the exact statements from every single interview that  he wanted for each video, and then combining them together. 

Text based editing was so simple to use!

After watching a brief explainer video, I pulled up the first interview. All I had to do was select the start of the text that Robert wanted, make a cut, and then select the end of the text and make another cut. I was able to do what usually would have taken me hours to scrub through in less than 30 minutes! This was mind blowing! I could not believe how simple it was to use! I was able to cut out all 5 video subjects in less than 2 hours! (This would normally take me 2 days to do!) After that I just did the final names, titles, logos, and music! 

We saved time and money with adobe’s text based editing

We had a very strict budget for editing, after using Adobe’s new text based editing platform, we came in well under budget! This simply put a big smile on my face! Robert was very happy with the end result, so was the team at AAQEP.

Film production in Utah can be very interesting! As a local Utah video production company, Levitate Media Group often gets inquiries from businesses or organizations about filming content, testimonials, interviews, how to videos or explainer videos from out of the area. It is always interesting to learn about new products, or new ideas these businesses bring to our attention. 

Levitate recently filmed a conference at the Hilton Salt Lake City Center for the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation. (AAQEP)

Robert Johnston contacted us to see if we were available to capture the testimonial interviews at the conference held on September 20th, 2023 at the Hilton Salt Lake City Center to capture their film production needs. There were 10 interviews to be recorded. Originally, they thought it would be best to rent a suite to record the testimonials. With over 10 years experience, we recommended recording the testimonials around various locations in the conference. Their main concern was getting good quality sound as it would be loud with much background noise. We assured them that by using high quality Lav Mics we would be able to get great sound in much more interesting locations. It would be much more exciting than having all 10 interviews filmed in a suite with less than ideal background. 

Being a filmmaker and mainly focusing on film production. I have never given much thought to accreditations for teachers. It was interesting to learn about how fast the teaching environment is changing post Covid. During the interviews it was exciting to learn how educators from all across the country were working together on unique and innovative approaches to solve the various challenges in education post Covid.

We interviewed the President and CEO of AAQEP, Mark LaCelle-Peterson and also COO Linda McKee. The participants came from all over the country, they had different backgrounds and different needs. The film production looked great! Also, their insight was valuable and they spoke in the highest regards of their participation!

AAQEP is has partnered with the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) https://iste.org/ to support educator preparation providers in preparing teachers to thrive in digital classrooms of a post-COVID world.

AAQEP and ISTE, the premier professional organization and standard-setter for technology in education at all levels, invite AAQEP members and other providers to participate on multiple innovative skills such as: Accelerating innovation in educator preparation. Preparing new teachers with the skills needed to use technology to be successful. Whether it be online, in person, or a combination of blended learning environments. They also encourage collaboration between Educator Preparation Programs and School Districts.

AAQEP members also have the option to pursue American School Counselor Association (ASCA) recognition for their school counselor preparation programs.They can do this by using the information submitted in their AAQEP Quality Assurance Report.

By taking advantage of this opportunity to receive national recognition and feedback from field experts they are able to increase educator credibility.

The film production of the testimonial interviews looked fabulous! All of the feedback was positive, the participants had been able to learn new ways to utilize new technology and new methods to improve their school faculties ability to thrive in the modern era of post high school education!

All in all it was a very good day! The interviews looked and sounded great, the feedback they provided was very useful. We were pretty tired by the end of the day, but that is how it should be!

MAKING CITY VIDEOS

Making City Videos takes a large amount of planning. To start, there is a vast amount of info that needs to be told in a short video. To condense this much info takes a good video editor. They need to be able to shorten all of the video clips into a dense compact story that keeps the viewer watching.

Planning the video outline

The way we start planning almost any video we produce, is to make a bullet list of the things we want to highlight in the story.This can include a wide scope of the main subjects, and the key points we want to share within the video.

The Start of the video

A good video is organized, the same way a book is, the outline is really like a book’s chapters. First of all, we have the start, this needs to be good. It needs to get the viewers attention. It can also tell the viewer what the video is about. In the case of making videos for cities, it can be both.

Main content of the video

Next comes the body of the video, this is the main info being conveyed to tell the story. You can think of the main body of the video as all of the chapters in a book except the first and the last. Most times, in making city videos have a few guests who talk about a single subject in the video.

For example, in the video we produced for the city of Cottonwood Heights, one of the guests, David Neeleman spoke about the vast amount of class “A” office space in the city. Why he chose Cottonwood Heights as the base for his new airline company Breeze Airways.

In the video we produced for the City of Murray. One of the guests was Making City Videos Gail Miller, Gail spoke about doing business in Murray for over 40 years, she spoke about how great all of the Mayor’s were to work with. How happy they were to have started out in Murray and how they grew to have 6 auto dealerships in Murray. Eventually growing to 64 dealerships and buying the Utah Jazz Professional Basketball Team. Now reformed to the Larry H Miller Group.

These segments are normally 30-90 seconds depending on the content. A guest speaker adds credibility to the video, they are not from the city, they add an interesting view of the city.

The funny thing is, these guests may have 10-15 minutes of interview material that we then have to condense into a 30-90 second clip. This is why a good editor is so important! It is also very important to have an ample amount of b-roll for editing.

B-roll is the video footage used to show what the guest speaker is talking about. B-roll is vital for a few reasons, first it is used as a way to keep the viewer interested in what the guest is talking about. Second it is used to cover the cuts made in editing. In editing video you may cut out some of the video to condense the content. This is known as a jump cut, if done with 2 cameras it will usually look okay. If you use the b-roll over the jump cut, it looks much better! Ample b-roll allows the video editor to deliver a succinct message that looks good and is interesting!

The last thing is of course the ending. The last chapter of the book, the last chapter of the video. In the case of making city videos, this is a short summary to support the video’s message. Making city videos differs from marketing videos. A marketing video has a call to action at the end. In making city videos, what we do is recap the video, it may include their logo and website URL but it does not have a call to action.
